Teenagers and kids around the country have come to live by the mantra: “There’s nothing to do in this town! It’s too small.” Many would look at Pagosa and say the same thing about our beautiful town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. However, one look at the annual activities of me, Jesse Morris, a senior at Pagosa Springs High School, you’d think differently.
The sports program at PSHS is extremely successful and has a very high participation rate for all the different activities. I have played on the soccer team for the past 4 years and served as Varsity Captain this season. The sports teams at PSHS are very successful; sweeping the district in soccer, basketball, football, baseball, and volleyball. Our Varsity girls and boys soccer coach, Lindsay Kurt Mason, was recently awarded the Colorado High School Activities Association Coach of the Year Award. If sports are not your cup of tea, then Pagosa has plenty in store for you. I am very active in the performing arts community of Pagosa Springs. I partake in award winning school drama club which performs plays with social messages in the annual Intermountain League Drama Competition along with performing in the musical theatre department.
I’ve taken first chair in numerous honor bands throughout Colorado, including the All-State Orchestra. School programs aside, Music Boosters of Pagosa Springs performs 2-3 shows a year. I have participated in too many shows to count and every one has been both challenging and fun. My teachers, coaches, and directors have devoted a great deal of their lives to the community and I humbly thank them for their dedication and positive impact on my life.
Now, pile all of this on top of maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Student Council, part time job at the Alpen Haus Ski Center, local advocacy groups, backing up my “outstanding Junior” award, applying to colleges, skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, “hot tubbing” at the Springs, and enjoying the natural scenery, and you have one very busy, active, and healthy teenage lifestyle in a small mountain town.
