Many of these original settlers were Ute Indians. During the 1870's the U.S. government established Fort Lewis near the site of the springs, and shortly thereafter, a town called Pagosa Springs was established along the banks of the San Juan River.
Today, Pagosa Springs is one of the fastest growing communities in Colorado.
