It's about the wilderness...more specifically the San Juan National Forest, Rio Grande National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness that provides more than 1 million acres of nature's play land to explore. To truly experience the awesome peaks and natural beauty, you need to hike into the backcountry...smell the fragrant wildflowers...feel the mist rising from a waterfall...and absorb the amazing rays on top of a 12,000 foot ridge.
It is impossible to list all of the hundreds of available trails and hikes, so we have picked a few favorites, classified by easy, moderate, and difficult. Please remember to carry lots of water and be off of the high peaks by noon due to rapidly changing weather conditions. You might also want to consult your physician before attempting any of the high altitude climbs listed on Planet Pagosa. Please contact the Pagosa Ranger District Office, 970-264-2268, regarding camping at Trail Heads and Campfire restrictions.
Easy hikes are for any age group and are best to do when you first arrive in Pagosa Springs. Even if you are in good physical condition, it takes a few days for your body to acclimate to the altitude and so you should not do anything too strenuous your first few days. These hikes are day hikes so they can be done in a few hours. Click here for pictures and directions on the Easy hikes.
Moderate hikes are usually more than 2 miles long and require some sort of climb. If you are in good physical condition, you could attempt these during your first couple of days in Pagosa. The hikes here are day hikes, but some require a longer drive and take the better part of a day to complete. However, part of the fun of hiking in Pagosa is the scenery you pass just getting to the trailhead! Click here for pictures and directions on the moderate hikes.
Difficult hikes are for the physically fit and for those people who have time to adjust to the climate and altitude changes. These are longer hikes and all involve a steep climb and longer distance. Most of these will take all day and some are good to backpack in camping equipment for an overnight stay. Some of these trails are harder to find, so you may need to find a guide to show you the way. Contact Planet Pagosa if you are interested in finding a guide.Click here for pictures and directions on the Difficult hikes.
